Video shows Harris County deputy struggling to walk during field sobriety test

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A Harris County Sheriff's Office deputy caught on video failing his field sobriety test made his first court appearance on Friday morning.

Former Sergeant David Hoang is accused of driving drunk after leaving his second job at a club in Katy on August 17.

Hoang, a 24-year veteran of HCSO, is being represented by attorney Tony Wadhawan.

"At this time, this case is still very much in its infancy. It's an ongoing investigation," Wadhawan said.

ABC13 was the first to report Hoang's arrest, as Kevin Adams had earlier observed Hoang allegedly leaving Mo's Place in Katy, where he worked an extra security job, stumbling just to get into his car.

Adams followed Hoang and then called 911. Records show Adams had called 911 at 2:49 a.m. He then recorded a startling video of the deputy having difficulty walking while trying to pass his field sobriety test.

In court, the judge called the charges, including the detail that Hoang apparently drove at speeds of up to 130 miles per hour, "egregious."

A Harris County Sheriff's Office sergeant was caught on video struggling to walk during a field sobriety test early Sunday, leading to his arrest on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Hoang was also apparently in full uniform at the time he was pulled over. The sheriff's department states that records indicate the entire traffic stop lasted approximately 90 minutes. Officials said it was a little longer than normal because two supervisors were called in to ensure the book conducted the field sobriety test.

Officials said that Mo's Place, where Hoang worked an extra job, will also face an investigation from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.

Mo's owner told ABC13 off-camera that he had spoken with his staff, and they all stated that they did not serve any alcohol to the five officers working that Saturday night, including Hoang.

The owner of Mo's also stated that he expects the TABC investigators to be on site and will fully cooperate with them.
