BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Brazoria County officials have issued an all-clear after they say a natural gas leak in the Alvin area led to several homes being evacuated on Wednesday.
The Alvin Police Department said there was a natural gas pipeline rupture in Hillcrest Village on Fairway Drive near the golf course. City of Alvin Councilman Scott Salter said the rupture was due to someone mowing the grass for the county and hitting the line.
Salter said the pipeline owner is Enterprise, adding that the isolation valves were 10 miles apart, which is why he says it to so long for gas to run out of the lines.
According to the Brazoria County Fire Marshal, 20 homes were evacuated in the immediate area, and additional homes and businesses within a half-mile radius of Hillcrest Golf Course were asked to leave until the leak was contained.
"The leak has been contained, and all roads have been opened. The threat to public safety has been lifted. Residents can now return to their homes," Brazoria County said in an update on social media.
SkyEye flew over the scene when the leak was still active, and the helicopter crew said they could smell the gas from the air.
Alvin ISD also sent a statement to parents, informing them of the rupture. The district said at the time that their buses were not allowed to enter Hillcrest Village, and families who live there would need to make arrangements to pick up their students from school.
