'Tragic accident': Victim ID'd in deadly Conroe construction collapse

CONROE, Texas (KTRK) -- The collapse of a trench at a Conroe construction site resulted in a "tragic accident" that killed a man and injured another, according to police.

The Conroe Police Department said Jose Arevalo, 44, of Houston, died after 10-foot dirt walls gave way and trapped him and his co-worker inside a trench on Saturday morning.

The men's co-workers attempted to rescue them while emergency services rushed to the scene, according to investigators.

Conroe PD said personnel from the Conroe Fire Department, The Woodlands Fire Department, North Montgomery County Fire ESD No. 1, Caney Creek Fire Department, and the Montgomery County Hospital District also responded to the scene and assisted with rescue and medical efforts.

Officials added that the other man trapped in the trench is 34 years old and was successfully removed. They said he was taken to the hospital, where he has since recovered from his critical injuries.

The construction site was operated by Engitex Construction, where a crew was installing underground piping, officials said.

Conroe PD said there was no evidence of foul play and that the incident appeared to be a tragic accident.

As the investigation unfolded, Conroe PD said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) responded to conduct its own investigation.
