Off-duty Freeport officer accidentally shoots neighbor in Clute

CLUTE, TX (KTRK) -- An off-duty Freeport officer accidentally shot a 35-year-old neighbor at an apartment complex in Clute.

According to Freeport police, authorities responded to the apartment, located in the 100 block of Lakeview Drive, around 4am Saturday.

The male victim was struck in the lower back while he was sleeping and taken by LifeFlight to Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Freeport police have not released the name of the officer, who has been with the department for just over a month. He has been placed on administrative leave.

The victim is expected to make a full recovery.

No word if the officer will face any charges. The shooting is under investigation.
