Suspect fights with K9 in officer-involved shooting in west Houston

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- An HPD officer shot a suspect during a burglary call in west Houston Saturday. The shooting came after several attempts to subdue the suspect with a Taser and K-9 were unsuccessful.

It happened at an apartment complex in the 1500 block of South Gessner. According to police, officers were called to the complex about a suspect who had reportedly planned a burglary.

When officers arrived, they found the suspect and ordered him to show his hands, but he reportedly didn't comply. A K-9 officer made contact with the suspect in an attempt to subdue him, but the suspect fought back.

Officers then used their Tasers repeatedly to get the suspect to surrender, but they apparently had no effect. They say the suspect pulled the darts out.

At one point, police say the suspect crouched down in an aggressive manner, as if he was about to lunge at officers. They say he also reached for a knife in his waistband.

That's when one of the officers opened fire, striking the suspect.

Even after being hit, the suspect fought with the K-9 officer and ignored officers' commands. Officers hit the suspect with a Taser two more times. Again, officers say they had no effect.

Multiple officers then managed to physically subdue the suspect.

The suspect was taken to Ben Taub hospital and is expected to survive. No officers were injured.
