The victim was on her way to work when she was fatally shot while sitting in her car

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A woman was gunned down, sitting in her car in a parking lot, and police and family are left searching for answers.

Houston police were called out to the Wilcox apartments on the South Loop near Kirby between 6 and 7am Friday. A 50-year-old woman was found dead in a corner of the complex.

Investigators say the woman had her car door open, as if she was getting into leave. Her purse was found with her, so police aren't sure if robbery was a motive in this case.

The victim's son, Jose Gonzales, identified her to Eyewitness News as Angelina Romero. He says he was sleeping when she left to go to her job, where she takes care of a 15-year-old boy with autism, and he heard a gunshot that woke him.

"In her normal routine, like every day, she woke up to go to work," Gonzales said. "I heard a gunshot. It woke me up and went outside but didn't see anything. Then like 20 minutes later, they came knocking on my door to check on my mom because something was wrong with her. I know she's a little bit sick, so it could have been something different, so I came outside to check."

Police have heard that perhaps there was a person who might have seen a car leaving and they hope that witness will come forward.

The family has set up a gofundme site to help with funeral expenses.
