HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Bobby Allen Sr. and Esmeralda Roberts probably never would've met, if it weren't for one moment last week. It was the kind of moment that defines a person, that says everything you need to know.
"My oldest son said, 'That's my dad and I'm very proud.' And then his two brothers chimed in with him" Allen said. "That meant everything."
Let's go back to Sunday evening. Roberts had lost her wallet, and along with it, cash, bank cards, and all of her IDs. Allen was looking for work. He doesn't have a car, which is why he happened to be walking down I-105 in Conroe.
"That purse was sitting there," he said. "Another job I had I picked up debris, so it's my nature to look at debris on the road."
We've all heard the saying, "There's a reason for everything."
Allen gave the wallet to police. He didn't take a penny out of it.
"That's someone's mother, that's their wife, that's their sister," he explained. "That money goes to that family and it's just too wrong. Way too wrong and I won't do it. If I can't make it, it's not my money."
Well, Allen is making his own money now.
After we aired his story, he got more job offers than he could accept. Friday was his first day at work, selling auto parts at J & B Auto Supply.
"It's nice to know there are still people like that in this world," said his new boss, Bubbie Brandt.
Bobby now has a bicycle, too - a gift from Roberts and her family.
"I can't express how much we really appreciate you," she said.
