HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A suspected robber is now in custody after a short police chase in southwest Houston.

Officers spotted a green pickup truck that had been reported stolen earlier in the night along Belfort near Beltway 8. Officers followed the vehicle to Bissonnet at the Southwest Freeway where they then attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

Officers say the driver immediately got out and ran off on foot. He was caught after a short chase.

Police then searched the stolen truck and found several stolen items like cell phones, tools and shoes inside.

Officers believe the suspect is part of a bigger group of robbers. They say the truck he was driving was stolen at gunpoint by three males hours before the chase. The same truck was then used in two additional robberies later in the night.

The driver was the only one inside when police spotted the stolen vehicle, so officers believe the other two suspects had been dropped off elsewhere. Police are still investigating.
