An off-duty HPD officer shot and killed a man who pointed a gun at home outside a restaurant and bar

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A man is dead after police say he pointed a gun at off-duty Houston police officer in southeast Houston.

It happened at 1:15am in the parking lot of the Bombshells Restaurant and Bar located in the 12800 block of the Gulf Freeway.

Two off duty HPD officers were working security and had asked two groups of people to leave after a disturbance inside the restaurant. That's when a woman ran up to one of the officers and reported a man had a gun.

The officer spotted a man with his hand behind his back. When the man pulled his hand around, the officer spotted the weapon and gave a verbal command for the man to drop the gun.

The man then moved behind a second person and pointed the gun at the officer. The officer then opened fire, striking the suspect from about 25-30 feet away.

The suspect was taken to the hospital where he died.

The incident is still under investigation. An HPD spokesperson says the officer has been on the force for about six years.
