Deadly weekend on Houston roadways
Nine people were killed on Houston roadways in recent days, highlighting the need for greater scrutiny of roadway safety.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- It's been a deadly few days on Houston area roadways. Nine people have been killed in 72 hours.

The most recent traffic death happened Monday evening on the Eastex Freeway near Tidwell Road.

Police say two men were changing the tire of a truck while stopped on the moving lanes of the freeway when a second pickup slammed into the back of their truck, killing one of the man. The other man was hurt and taken to the hospital. The driver of the second pickup was not hurt. It's unlikely he will be charged.

This deadly accident comes a day after two men were killed on Loop 610 while trying to catch a loose dog. A good samaritan pulled over late Sunday night when he saw a man trying to wrangle in his pitbull. Both the owner of the dog and the man who tried to help were run over by two different trucks.

Six people died Saturday in two separate accidents. A family of four was killed in Conroe by an alleged drunk driver. Two drivers were killed earlier that day in a head-on wrong way crash in Northwest Harris County.
