Mayor tweets frustration over daughter's driver's license process
Mayor Annise Parker took to Twitter to express the difficulty of getting her daughter a driver's license because documents show she has 2 moms

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houston Mayor Annise Parker took to Twitter to express frustration about the process to get her daughter's driver's license.

Parker tweeted "@AnniseParker: Daughter needs drivers test. Has all docs, some in MomA name, some MomK, but w/ birth cert showing both. DPS says can only be from 1 mom!-A."

Friday, she followed up with a tweet saying the third attempt was a success, but with a different set of documents.

Houston transplant Connie Wilson says she empathizes with Mayor Parker's story.

"It's taking discrimination to another entire generation. Somebody who is not married to anyone at all," says Connie Wilson. "This is a child that happens to have two moms."

Wilson, who recently moved to Houston from California with her wife, says she worries about the same type of issues when her children go to DPS for their license more than a decade down the road.

Wilson spoke with us recently about the struggle to get her own Texas license. She says DPS wouldn't accept her marriage certificate as a form of identification.

DPS released the following statement Friday afternoon:

"All individuals applying for their first Texas driver license must provide a variety of documents to prove their identity: Social Security Number, U.S. citizenship or lawful presence status, and Texas residency. In this case, the adult applicant did not initially present sufficient documentation to prove residency. Once she provided the required documentation, she was able to complete the transaction. There is no indication that any delay in the process was related to same-sex marriage."

Mayor Parker was not available for comment.
