Grocery store under fire for selling freshly slaughtered raccoons

TEMPLE CITY, CA (KTRK) -- A Chinese grocery store in California is under fire for selling freshly slaughtered raccoons.

According to the Los Angeles Times, a shopper spotted the raccoon carcasses in the freezer section of Metro Supermarket in Temple City Monday. They were going for $9.99 a pound.

The raccoons had not been skinned and were in plastic bags next to meat and fish.

The shopper posted the video to Facebook, and store employees say health inspectors showed up the next day to haul away the raccoons.

The Los Angeles County Public Health Department says raccoons are game animals, and it is legal to sell them, but only if their source is legitimate.

The Metro Supermarket has its own farm where it grows fresh vegetables. No word yet on where the raccoons came from.

Store employees say raccoons are considered to be a delicacy in China.
