KATY, TX -- With Houston's scorching summer heat in full effect, the natural reaction is to hole up and watch Netflix. The city of Katy is attempting to break through such inclinations by creating a beautiful and educational nature park in their own backyard.

The city of Katy Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with Keep Katy Beautiful and Centerpoint Energy, has elected to build a new three-acre arboretum in Katy City Park.

Brad Barnes, director of the city of Katy's Parks and Recreation department, explained that the idea for an arboretum sprouted from discussions between the Parks and Recreation department and the city's local Keep Katy Beautiful affiliate. The idea was based on Centerpoint Energy's Right Tree Right Place initiative, which aims to provide people the correct information regarding what types of trees to plant under utility lines.
