VON ORMY, TX -- A Texas trooper has fatally shot a driver during a struggle after the convicted felon said he had a weapon.

The Texas Department of Public Safety on Thursday didn't immediately release names of the driver or the trooper.

The trooper was on patrol Wednesday night near Von Ormy, southwest of San Antonio, when he pulled over a vehicle with a broken taillight.

Trooper Jason Reyes says the driver became evasive and finally said he was a convicted felon with a weapon in his vehicle. Reyes says the trooper and the driver struggled. A Taser failed to subdue the man, who got out of his vehicle.

The trooper opened fire. The driver died at the scene. The trooper wasn't hurt.

Details weren't immediately available on the driver's criminal history.
