GROTON, CT -- Navy personnel opened fire at the Groton submarine base to stop a man who allegedly had a knife from entering the base around 7pm Thursday night.

The Navy says a person walked up to the base and tried to enter through the main gate. Navy personnel say they ordered who they're calling a "belligerent suspect allegedly brandishing a knife" to stop and when the suspect didn't listen, they fired.

The Navy says two Navy Civilian Police Officers were injured by the ricocheting bullets. The officers were taken to a hospital.

The suspect was not injured and was turned over to Groton police, according

to the Navy. They say he has been taken to a hospital for evaluation.

That suspect's identity has not been released.
