Iran live updates: IRGC says Strait of Hormuz will 'never' revert to pre-war state

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' chief of intelligence, Majid Khademi, was killed in an attack overnight, the IRGC's public relations arm confirmed in a statement on Monday.

The IRGC statement blamed the "American-Israeli enemy" for Khademi's killing.

Khademi had been recently appointed to the role, replacing the previous intelligence chief -- Mohammad Kazemi -- who was killed in an Israeli attack in June during the 12-day war.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a statement on Monday that Israel was responsible for the assassination. Khademi, Katz said, was "directly responsible" for "war crimes and one of the three most senior figures" in the IRGC.

In a post to X, the Israel Defense Forces said Khademi was "one of the IRGC's most senior commanders and had accumulated extensive experience over many years."

The Sharif University of Technology has been hit by airstrikes, according to Iranian state media.

The strikes reportedly hit a gas station near the university gas station, causing a "temporary gas outage" in the Sharif neighborhood.

Iranian-American Rep. Yassamin Ansari, D-Ariz., denounced the reported overnight bombing in a post to X on Monday.

"Sharif University is Iran's MIT. They've produced a huge number of engineers who've gone on to Silicon Valley and founded some of the most successful American tech companies," Ansari wrote in her post. "Why are we bombing a university in a city of 10 million people?"

Sharif University is a leading public research institution and widely regarded as Iran's top university for science, engineering and technology.

Masoud Tajrishi, the university's president, condemned the attack in a video message sent from the scene of the incident, standing next to a pile of rubble outside a damaged building.

President Donald Trump told ABC News on Sunday that if Iran doesn't make a peace deal in 48 hours, "we're blowing up the whole country."

In a phone interview with ABC News' senior political correspondent Rachel Scott, Trump said he expects the Iranian government to make a deal in "days, not weeks."

"If it happens, it happens. And if it doesn't, we're blowing up the whole country," Trump said. "We're blowing up, as I said, it's going to be bridge day and it's going to be power plant day in the country of Iran."

Trump said "very little" is "off limits" if no deal is made. Asked if that meant targets would include civilian infrastructure, Trump replied, "I don't want to talk about that."

Trump also said he hasn't ruled out sending ground troops to Iran.

"I don't think it's necessary, but I don't rule anything out," Trump said.

When asked if he'll extend the deadline to give Iran more time to make a peace deal, Trump said, "They have plenty of time to make a deal."

"They don't want to make a deal; their whole country is gone," Trump said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday congratulated President Donald Trump for the U.S. military rescue of a downed airman inside Iran.

"Congratulations President Donald Trump! All Israelis rejoice in the incredible rescue of a brave American pilot by America's dauntless warriors," Netanyahu wrote, in part. "This proves that when free societies muster their courage and their resolve, they can confront seemingly insurmountable odds and overcome the forces of darkness and terror."

Netanyahu went on to say that the rescue "reinforces the sacred principle: no one is left behind. This is a shared value demonstrated time and time again in the history of both our countries."

"President Trump, Donald, my dear friend, once again your decisive leadership brought another great victory to America," Netanyahu said. "I salute you! We all do!"
