Texans get ready for regular season opener vs. Bills on Sunday at Reliant Stadium: Live updates

The Carolina Panthers held on to defeat the Houston Texans 16-13 on Friday night in the preseason finale for both teams.

Houston's last-ditch effort to take its first lead of the game - or at least tie it - ended when Jeremiah Moon sacked Rypien and forced a fumble, and Cam Gill recovered with 54 seconds left.

The Panthers limited the Texans to 173 yards while getting four sacks and two interceptions.

Both offensive coordinators were extremely conservative on offense, playing on a field that has been waterlogged by heavy rains in the hours leading up to the game.

Neither team played its starters.

Houston's Davis Mills and Carolina's Kenny Pickett started at quarterback, but neither could muster any points before being removed after about a quarter. Mills finished 3 of 7 for 18 yards with one interception, while Pickett was 5 of 8 for 48 yards.

Ryans: Texans have tough decisions at WR

Coach DeMeco Ryans said the Texans have some tough decisions to make at wide receiver on cutdown day after losing Jayden Higgins for the season and with Tank Dell still working his way back from a devastating knee injury.

"We needed to add to the receiver room, and we are still trying to find who will be those guys for us," Ryans said. "It won't be an easy decision because we have more guys deserving than we have spots for."

Aside from Nico Collins, Justin Watson and Xavier Hutchinson, the Texans have Jones, Sterling Shepard, Jaylin Noel, Jared Wayne and a host of rookies vying for spots.

Ryans said what complicates the decision is some receivers - such as Jones - only recently arrived and are still becoming familiar with the playbook, and they haven't had much time to evaluate them.

As for injuries, Texans defensive lineman Solomon Byrd was helped off the field after his neck snapped back while trying to tackle Panthers tight end James Mitchell in the fourth quarter.

The Houston Texans will face host Buffalo Bills on Sep. 13 in their season opener.

"By the H. For the H." Texans fans, the day is here!

The team has officially launched their HOUSTON/US uniforms as part of the NFL's collaboration with the Nike Rivalries Program. Each team designs uniforms that celebrate their community and local history.

Over the last few days, the Texans have teased the launch with a single social media video showing the players' excited first-look reactions.

The ball club sent out a press release moments before the drop, saying the uniforms were "built from the fabric of the city's streets."

Shortly after, the team's dropped the full reveal on social media Tuesday morning, complete with Houston's very own Fat Pat song "Tops Drop," had the caption: "Our city. Our colors. Our uniform."

The uniforms pay tribute to Houston's legendary street art culture, starting with the city's iconic blue-and-white mosaic street tiles. On the back of the Liberty White jersey, the players' names are etched to mimic the blue-and-white tiles seen on curbs in older Houston neighborhoods.

Street tiles in Houston date back to the 1920s and were the earliest expression of street art in the city. They were recently revived in 2015 with the Blue Tile Project after years of fading.

The rest of the uniforms feature details unique to the city and the team's history. The helmet pays tribute to the first-ever prototype, held up by the team's founder, Robert McNair, before the deep steel-blue helmet was adopted.

Players' numbers are stencil-blocked on the jersey and are inspired by the iconic "Be Someone" bridge.

Another feature is the new facemask, which pays homage to the city's car culture and features a chrome finish. For the first time ever in franchise history, the team's bullhead logo will sit on the heart-side of the jersey.

"This is the most Houston uniform that will ever grace the gridiron," Texans Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Doug Vosik said. "Our mission with the NFL and Nike when designing this uniform was simple: ignite our community, fanbase and city through hyper-local storytelling."

If you notice, the jersey also has a familiar color. Yes, the baby blue! A long-running homage across sports teams in Houston that gives nods to the Oilers, the first National Football League team in Houston before it eventually became the Tennessee Titans.

There has been plenty of ongoing controversy regarding the usage of the "Luv Ya Blue" colors. The team has tried to acquire the rights to the colors, which are owned by the Titans.

Back in 2025, the NFL sent a cease-and-desist to the University of Houston to stop wearing the iconic throwback uniforms, stating that it was "blatant copying of a trademark owned by the Tennessee Titans."

The Texans are expected to wear the rivalry jerseys for their Week 11 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, their divisional opponent, on Thursday Night Football in prime time.

It will be a while until the team wears them, but fans will be able to purchase the new jerseys on September 1, 2026, at the Houston Texans Team Shop from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.
