HOUSTON (KTRK) -- There was a big upset at Niko Niko's Gyro Eating Championship at Greek Fest in west Houston Sunday.
The world's top-ranked eater, Joey Chestnut, fell three gyros short in losing to the world's No. 2 competitive eater, Matt Stonie.
Stonie put away 24 gyros in 10 minutes to Chestnut's 21. That was good enough to earn Stonie the title here in Houston and a new world record, breaking Chestnut's mark of 22 1/4 that he set at Greek Fest last year.
"Joey Chestnut is the best in the world. To beat him is the most rewarding thing ever," said Stonie. "Setting the record was the cherry on top."
Coming in third was the top woman competitive eater, Miki Sudo.
With the win, Stonie takes home $2,500. Chestnut earned $1,250.
