DES MOINES-AMES, Iowa -- Like mother, like son.
One family saw two loved ones graduate at the same time as they crossed the stage of Iowa State University's graduation ceremony this weekend.
Kathleen and Zack Robertson not only share a parent-child relationship, but hope to make their mark as teachers with their new degrees.
The elder Robertson said she didn't know quite what she was going to do when she became an empty nester, so school seemed like a good idea.
"When the older two left to go and be out in the world, it was time for me to find more to do, so..." Kathleen said.
Paul Robertson, who watched his wife and son graduate together, says the journey has been inspirational.
"It's very interesting and obviously very proud of both of them," Paul said. "Kathleen's work ethic through all of this has been kind of an inspiration for all the boys to see how hard she's worked to get this done."
Both family members appeared in a cording ceremony held by the Iowa State College of Human Sciences, where Kathleen was awarded her cord by her husband and son.
While Kathleen is not certain where she'll be teaching, Zack has accepted a position in Cedar Rapids.
