"The safety of our students is always our top priority," said Dr. James Troutman in a statement. "We have policies and procedures in place to ensure that students remain safe and focused on academics while on campus. While tragic and upsetting, this was an isolated incident that took place outside of our classrooms."

Here is the full statement from Houston Can Academy:

The safety of our students is always our top priority. We have policies and procedures in place to ensure that students remain safe and focused on academics while on campus. While tragic and upsetting, this was an isolated incident that took place outside of our classrooms.

A shooting occurred today in the parking lot of our campus. We believe that one, and maybe two, of our students were injured. We do not yet have the names of the injured students or the identification of who shot them. It is our understanding that the person who committed this crime is not one of our students.

When the shots were fired, we immediately followed our emergency procedures locking down our campus to ensure the safety of our students and of our staff. Once Houston Police arrived we followed their directions regarding the safety of the campus.

Parents of enrolled students are being notified of the incident. Classes are currently being held and our school will be open tomorrow. We have counselors on campus available for our students, parents and staff today, tomorrow and this week.

Our focus at this time is to care for our students and make sure they are receiving the counseling resources and resources needed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, family and friends of all who are involved. This is a police matter and any questions you have about the incident should be directed to the Houston Police Department.
