HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houston is already home to the world's largest freeway, but it's about to get even bigger.
The Katy Freeway and Beltway 8 spans a massive 26 lanes. Just west of that area, between Beltway 8 and Highway 6, one lane will be added in each direction, eastbound and westbound.
A lane will also be added to the outbound exit to the already busy Highway 6.
The notoriously jammed ramp will be expanded from one lane to two.
TxDOT plans to do this without major construction.
Instead, crews will re-stripe the freeway to fit additional traffic.
Karen Othon of TxDOT says most of the work will happen overnight and during the weekend, and it will take four to five months to complete.
Crews expected to start in February of 2017.
