HOUSTON -- Houston City Attorney David Feldman has just turned in his resignation to Mayor Annise Parker.

Feldman says he is leaving his post to practice law with his son at his firm Feldman & Feldman. The resignation is effective January 16.

In his letter of resignation, Feldman writes to Parker, "My service as a City Attorney has marked the most interesting and challenging chapter of my legal career, and has afforded me the opportunity to give something back to my community, which I have always wanted to do. I am very proud of what I have been able to accomplish as City Attorney, and prouder still to have been part of your administration -- one that has made our city a better place, both today and tomorrow.

"Although I will always make myself available to you for advice and counsel once I leave the City, I will greatly miss working directly with you and your leadership team, as I will the outstanding lawyers and staff in the City Legal Department. It has been one of the great joys of my career to watch the Legal Department grow into the proactive, creative, client-focused in-house law firm we both envisioned it could be. Many people who work for the City have become my friends, and not simply colleague, and I will miss them all."

Feldman has served as Houston's city attorney since April 2010. Before that, he'd been practicing law at private firms for 33 years.
