HOUSTON -- The sports history books will say the Astros had the number one pick in 2014, and that they drafted pitcher Brady Aiken, but it looks like he will never play for them.

The deadline for signing this year's picks was today at 4pm, but that expired without a deal in place, so Aiken can re-enter the draft and the Astros will be compensated with the second pick in next year's draft.

The two parties agreed to a deal back in June, but the Astros changed their offer after a physical revealed some elbow and ligament issues, which Aiken's agent denied.

Astros GM Jeff Luhnow released the following statement Friday, saying in part, "The Astros offer to Brady was extremely fair considering all the factors involved in this case. As always, we approached these negotiations in good faith."
