Flu shots: Things you need to know about the vaccine

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Flu season is just around the corner in Houston.

Experts told Eyewitness News the flu typically hits the Bayou City around December and peaks in January through February. Doctors say the best way to prevent influenza is by getting the flu vaccine.

Dr. Carol J. Baker with the Center for Vaccine Awareness and Research at Texas Children's Hospital said the time is now to get you and your family protected before the highly contagious virus spreads around town.

"The science is there. It works. It's not perfect but not getting vaccinated gives you no protection. Vaccine is the single best way to protect you," said. Dr. Baker. "I think the biggest problem with flu is the everybody calls every illness during the winter, the flu. Flu is not like the measles where there's a big rash and people will recognize it."

Dr. Baker said last year 145 children died in the United States due to influenza. She stress half of the 145 were perfectly healthy when they contracted the virus. She also said what can be frustrating for some people is the vaccine is not always 100 percent.

Every year, the formula is designed to fight against a particular strain. Sometimes scientists don't always predict the exact strain.

Many places around town offer the vaccine including Walgreens. The company actually donates a vaccine when you receive one as part of their "Get a Shot. Give a Shot" campaign. For more information, visit their website.
