HOUSTON (KTRK) -- As the nation mourns the loss of Maya Angelou, two Houstonians reflect on their time with the celebrated author, poet and civil rights activist.

Hazel Biggers, 88, says she knew Angelou from "way way back." She hosted Angelou at her Houston home on several occasions where the two shared a love of art, music and especially food.

"Back then she had to sleep on the cot in the bedroom and she cooked," said Biggers. "Maya was our friend."

Biggers husband, John Biggers, illustrated several of Angelou's books including "Our Grandmothers."

"Our Grandmothers" is also a favorite of Reverend Bill Lawson, our own Melanie Lawson's father. The retired pastor met Angelou in the sixties during the civil rights movement.

"The times that we were together those were times that I was always in awe," said Lawson. "She was a woman who had such a remarkable insight in the world around."

Melanie Lawson interviewed Angelou before her visit to Houston in May of 2006. You can watch that interview here.
