HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A new season of Dancing With the Stars premieres tonight on ABC-13, and one familiar face is making a return in a new role.
Julianne Hough is back, but instead of competing for the mirror ball trophy, she's working the gold paddle as a judge. She'll even be judging her brother, Derek.
Julianne and Derek Hough quickly became household names to many back in 2007 when they entered the ballroom as pros on Dancing With The Stars. The Houghs are in different shoes for the 19th season, and they stopped by the Houston Boys and Girls Club to spread their love of dancing. They say each week on the show is like starting from scratch - from choosing music, building sets, and creating costumes.
"Those seamstresses on the show work magic because they literally make those costumes on the show in four days, and I mean, they are skin tight, they do not come off. Well, Sometimes they come off, actually, I've had a few instances where that's happened," Julianne said.
That's just part of what happens backstage to make the competitors look flawless on stage.
"It takes me like five minutes to do makeup, and the girls are there from 8 in the morning for like seven hours. It's crazy. It's a whole process. I'm like, 'thank goodness I'm a guy,'" said Derek.
Julianne even dished on some backstage beauty secrets for the women.
"The girls don't wear tights. They just fake tan. A fake tan makes you drop like 10 pounds," Julianne said.
But they say behind the scenes at the show isn't as glamorous as viewers may think.
"It's pretty chaotic. It gets pretty cramped back there with all the makeup artists running around, girls, people wiping fake tan on them, and you're' trying not to get it on you," Derek said.
Even though they're veterans of the show, they still get the dancing jitters.
"I get nervous every time," Derek said. "Those nerves are exciting though. They're fun to toy with and play with. It's one of the things I teach my celebrities when I'm teaching them is about those nerves, using them, and getting excited about them."
He'll be teaching 18-year-old Youtube sensation Bethany Mota this season.
