Survivor of fiery crash in northwest Harris County says he tried to save his friend

CYPRESS, TX (KTRK) -- A survivor of a crash involving an 18-wheeler said he tried his best to save his friend.

Anthony Hogue said he and his friends were on their way to Katy early Thursday morning. Their car stalled, and the driver pulled the car into the right lane of 290 westbound. There is no shoulder on the road because of construction. The driver got out of the car to examine the problem.

"I heard her say, 'move over move over move over,' and I seen her waving her phone, and then I seen the semi just keep coming," Hogue said, "Kept coming on, never hit his brakes, try to turn, move out the way or nothing. She jumped out the way and as soon as she jumped out the way, he plowed into the back of us."

The semi-truck and the car caught fire. The driver of the semi-truck died as well as one passenger in the car. That passenger was one of Hogue's good friends.

"We pulled one passenger out and we tried to pull the other passenger out," Hogue said, "We tried and tried and tried. We just couldn't do it."

Hogue's sister Brandi Clarke rushed to the hospital when she heard the news.

"I'm glad he's ok, nothing major broken or anything," Clarke said, "We're gonna keep him here and help him get better. He's gonna be sore for a few days, but he's gonna be ok."

The Harris County Medical Examiner's Office has not yet released the names of the victims.
