YUBA CITY, California (KTRK) -- A customer says he wasn't going to stand idly by as a man tried to rob a Wendy's restaurant on Christmas night in the Sacramento area.
Surveillance video shows the customer, identified as Daniel, hitting the armed, would-be robber over the head with a wooden dining chair.
"I notice this guy walk in, he had a plastic bag on his head -- a yellow plastic bag. At first, I thought it was a gag, and then I noticed he had a knife in his hand. He cut in front of the line, walked up to the window and said give me the money!" Daniel said.
Daniel says he was in town visiting his parents for the holidays when the incident happened.
"I hit him hard. I hit him really hard. I could hear the chair crack," Daniel said.
He said there was only one thing going through his mind as he smacked the guy.
"I'm not going to let you turn this into somebody's Christmas memorial," Daniel said.
The suspect still managed to bolt out the door to a getaway car waiting nearby.
Even though the man got away, employees and other customers are calling Daniel a hero.
"I feel like I stopped something bad from happening, but I don't feel like a hero," he said.
