HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A candle left burning in a dog kennel caught a home in southeast Houston.

Firefighters were called to the home around 3:20am this morning on Falvey at Toni. Firefighters found smoke coming from the one story home.

An elderly couple who lives at the home says they woke up to the alarms going off, smelled smoke and safely evacuated the house. Firefighters say the couple left a citronella candle burning in the dog kennel to keep mosquitoes away, but the candle caught the kennel on fire and spread to the attic of the home.

The house sustained significant damage, but there were no injuries. The dog also made it out safely.
