Men pull driver from burning car after crash
SCOTTSBURG, Indiana -- Three men came to the rescue just in the nick of time after a car with two people inside crashed and quickly caught fire.
It happened Wednesday morning in Scottsburg, about an hour and a half south of Indianapolis.
The driver had lost control of the car, which went down a hill and burst into flames.
Brandon Watson, a reserve deputy with the local sheriff's department, was one of the first people to arrive on the scene.
"The passenger door of the vehicle popped open and the passenger exited the vehicle, fell out of the car and started to stumble up the hill," Watson said.
Watson says he noticed the driver still sitting in the burning car, wearing his seat belt. He pulled him out, but that's when he realized the smoke and flames were not his only problems.
"I started up the hill before I realized I couldn't go much farther," Watson said.
By then, help was on the way from two city workers who turned their truck around to join the rescue.
Tim Cline and James Toler worked with Watson to pull the driver and passenger away from the crash scene.
After getting them to safety, the men realized this was a close call.
"The car was starting to explode, the tire exploded - the flames were getting pretty intense," Toler said.
Both people inside the car were taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Watson, Toler and Cline hope to reconnect with the victims or at least get an update on their conditions.
