Houston City Council approves new bike plan
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- In effort to promote a safer and bicycle-friendly city by 2027, officials have passed a new bike plan in the city of Houston.
The plan provides recommendations on the location and types of bicycle facilities, projects, policies and programs, city officials said.
"Houstonians need more choices to connect safely to jobs, parks and services other than by car," said Mayor Sylvester Turner in a statement. "The Houston Bike Plan provides a guide toward creating a safer and more accessible city that can be enjoyed by anyone who wants to ride a bicycle."

According to the city, the plan will also add over 600 miles to the current 270 mile bike-way network. The city says it will put more than 80 percent of people and jobs within half a mile of a "comfort bikeway."
Funding partners include BikeHouston, Houston Parks Board, Houston-Galveston Area Council, TxDOT, Federal Transit Administration and Federal Highway Administration.
