While New York, Chicago and San Francisco may be known as the foodie capitals of the United States, it was Spain's El Celler de Can Roca that was named the best restaurant in the world this week.
El Celler de Can Roca, where a meal can cost over $200, dethroned Copenhagen's Noma for the top spot on the list of the 50 best restaurants in the world, which is sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna. Noma fell to No. 3, with Osteria Francescana in Italy taking the No. 2 spot. Central in Lima, Peru and Eleven Madison Park in New York City rounded out the top five, with Eleven Madison Park being the only American restaurant to crack the top 10.
As far as other American restaurants that made the list, New York's Le Bernardin came in at No. 18 and the highly respected avante-garde establishment Alinea in Chicago fell to No. 26, down from ninth place last year. Thomas Keller's Per Se in New York came in at No. 40, while his Napa Valley destination, The French Laundry just barely made the cut at No. 50.
