Child, 5, struck and killed by car in west Houston

HOUSTON

It happened just after 8pm on Boone Road and Pompano Lane. Houston Fire Department crews responded to the accident. When they arrived, they learned a five-year-old had been struck by a minivan.

According to police, the girl, who's been identified as five-year-old Naima Williams, was steps ahead of her mother when she stepped out onto the road. Witnesses say the van was traveling about 40 miles per hour through the intersection when it struck Williams.

"I saw some people coming over and I heard screams, and I thought it was just trick-or-treaters crying," witness Jesse Campos said. "But when I heard a serious scream, I ran home because I was walking my dogs. But I came back over here, and when I came over here, the ambulances were gone."

Emergency personnel performed CPR and transported Williams to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, but she didn't survive.

The driver of the minivan turned around and stayed at the scene. No charges are expected. Authorities are calling it a horrible accident.
