Suspect fatally shot by deputy in NE Harris County

HOUSTON

The shooting took place at about 2pm this afternoon at a home in the 12800 block of Gable Wind Mill. According to Christina Garza, spokesperson for the Harris County Sheriff's Office, deputies were trying to serve a warrant at the time. Four deputies entered the home, and one remained outside.

Garza says as the deputies were searching the home, one deputy found the suspect hiding in a closet. The suspect reportedly opened fire in the direction of the deputy. The deputy returned fire, killing the suspect.

"In the process of clearing the residence, one of our deputies opens the door to one of the closets," Garza said. "When he does so, the suspect discharges his weapon. Our deputy returns fire. The suspect is dead here at the scene. It is now being investigated by the Harris County Sheriff's Office homicide unit."

The deputy was not injured.

The suspect, who died at the scene, was wanted for aggravated assault and family violence. There was no one else in the home.

The suspect's identity has not been officially released, but court documents show that John Wayne Pinkston of the same address is charged with aggravated assault on a family member. He is accused of shooting his estranged wife and a male friend of her on Father's Day. The wife told officials she has a protective order against Pinkston.

The shooting remains under investigation.
