East Texas papers sold to Victoria Advocate owner

The Longview News-Journal, the Marshall News Messenger and a related string of East Texas weekly newspapers will soon have new ownership.

ASP Westward is selling the papers to Texas Community Media LLC, owner of The Victoria Advocate for three generations. A statement posted on the Longview and Marshall papers' websites says the sale is expected to close soon. Te4rms weren't disclosed.

Advocate co-publisher Stephen McHaney will move to Longview to become the News-Journal publisher, succeeded Tom Stamper who is resigning. Phil Latham will remain editor and publisher of the News Messenger.

The sale also includes 12 weekly newspapers scattered around northeast Texas.
