Reporter Elissa Rivas' Facebook page helps local students

HOUSTON

Elissa was reporting from our parking lot Friday on the donations that were coming in for Operation Backpack, the annual drive is designed to help local students make it to class with everything they need to succeed.

Elissa's idea was to personally buy 13 backpacks and 13 of each items on the supply list for each 13 'likes' on her ABC13 Facebook page. She announced the challenge on air during her report, and you responded!

The number of 'likes' for her page easily exceeded enough for her to go out and buy backpacks and supplies for 13 students. So this weekend, Elissa and her daughter went shopping for backpacks and supplies to fill them with, and then dropped them off at a local YMCA.

Elissa posted the following message on her Facebook page over the weekend: "YOU did a GOOD thing! By 'liking' my page you helped me reach my goal of enough hits to fill 13 backpacks with everything on the YMCA Operation Backpack school supply list! THANK YOU! My daughter, husband and I are delivering them today. : )"
