School's out for Saavedra

HOUSTON He came to the post in December 2004. Under Dr. Saavedra's leadership, HISD enacted a new pay-for-performance program for teachers and the district built science labs in more than 100 elementary schools. Dr. Saavedra also spearheaded a "reach out to dropouts" campaign.

The school board named San Diego School District Superintendent Terry Grier as a finalist to replace Dr. Saavedra. The board hopes to make a decision in a few weeks.

HISD Chief Financial Officer Melinda Garrett will serve as interim superintendent.
