Man accused of killing ex due in court

HOUSTON Selestino Torres is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, 23-year-old Michelle Lira, and injuring her mother, Ramona Gomez. Today, he'll face a judge.

Speaking for the first time since the shooting, Gomez says she is angry and filled with grief, and determined to get justice for her daughter. The mother of a murder victim, who held her daughter as she died, says the man who shot both of them should be sent to death row.

After five days on the run, Torres was arrested late Saturday night. It was last week when witnesses say Torres confronted Lira and when she didn't want to talk to him, he allegedly retaliated with gunfire.

Gomez was in the SUV with her daughter at the time. They were leaving for work and were in the driveway at the family's home when Gomez says her daughter leaned over and became a human shield. Lira was shot nine times as she tried to save her mother's life.

"I said, I'm not ready to die. I got two other children. My husband, my family needs me," said Gomez. "So I got her and opened her eyes and did the sign of the cross and I blessed her and told her to go home to be with the Lord."

Gomez is not only dealing with the loss of her daughter, but she is also facing a life which could be filled with a lot of physical pain. She was shot seven times in the attack.

Doctors were only able to remove a few of the bullets and fear if they try to remove the ones in her neck, it could cause traumatic injury to her spinal cord or even death.

"He set out on a mission. He did it and now I want his mission to be accomplished by the death penalty," said Gomez. "He left me like this and I loved him like a son. I've known him for seven years and I did nothing wrong to him."

Torres is charged with both murder and attempted murder. A judge doubled his bond to $400,000, because prosecutors believe Torres is a flight risk.
