I miss the 1990's version of Jim Carrey. For those of you that have seen the trailer for 'Yes Man', don't be fooled!
You might think that the movie is very similar to 1997's 'Liar Liar', but you'd be wrong.
'Yes Man' doesn't even come close to reaching the comedic bar set by that early Carrey film. It's largely a disappointment.
Carrey plays Carl Allen, a bank loan officer who decides his passionless life is wrecking his friendships and sending his life spiraling toward a very dark and unhappy place.
Since his divorce, he has avoided as much human contact as possible. When he is dragged to a motivational speech by a positivity guru, Carl takes his lessons to heart and begins answering every request from anyone in the affirmative response.
While I did laugh a few times, I just didn't feel like this movie was worth the price of an adult admission. I would have much rather checked it out on DVD.
Jim Carrey is better than this, but unfortunately the movies that really stretch his acting skill never make much money. I'm thinking of 'The Number 23', 'Lemony Snicket's a Series of Unfortunate Events', and 'The Majestic'.
Because of the underperformance of these types of films, Carrey seems to always fall back on what made him famous. I just wish the material was a great as the actor.
2 buckets.
