Astros to host 5K run at Minute Maid Park

HOUSTON The event is sponsored by the Methodist Hospital and the JLH Foundation, in partnership with Academy Sports and endorsed by the Chevron Houston Marathon. Proceeds from the race benefit the Astros in Action Foundation.

The Race for the Pennant course begins at Minute Maid Park on Texas Avenue, travels through downtown Houston, and finishes inside the park. The course is a USATF Certified Course (Certification #05021ETM). Runners and walkers are encouraged to register online in advance of the event by going to the Community tab at www.astros.com.

Registration forms are available at all Academy Sports stores. In-person registration and packet pickup will also be available at the Academy Sports location at 2404 Southwest Freeway on May 24 fom 10am to 2pm; May 29 from 10am to 8pm; and May 30 from 10am to 6pm. Registration forms are also available in the Union Station Lobby and the Fan Accommodations booths (Sections 112 and 323) at Minute Maid Park.

Advance Registration: 5K Run/Walk, $22; Junction Jack's Kids Fun Run = $16 (12 and under)
Race Day Registration: 5K Run/Walk, $25; Junction Jack's Kids Fun Run = $19 (12 and under)

Participants in the race will receive an official race t-shirt; a ticket voucher for two free tickets to a 2008 Astros home game and an invitation to the postrace Party inside Minute Maid Park. The party will immediately follow the race and will feature food, drinks and live entertainment. Special guests will include Astros Hall of Fame broadcaster Milo Hamilton, mascot Junction Jack and his friends, along with the Coca-Cola Park Patrol. An awards presentation will be held at the postrace Party, along with door prizes.

The first overall male and female runners in the 5K run each receive two round-trip airline tickets on Continental Airlines. Top male and female finishers in the following 5K age categories receive running shoes compliments of Academy Sports and the top three male and female 5K finishers in the following age groups receive a Houston Astros Family 4-pack, which includes four tickets for a 2008 Astros home game and four baseball caps.

Age categories: 0-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70+. Junction Jack's Kids Fun Run is non-competitive and all participating kids will receive medals.

Race Day schedule:

  • Race Day Registration: 6:30am-7:30am
  • 5K Run/Walk Start: 7:45am
  • Junction Jack's Kids Fun Run: 8:45am
  • Postrace party and awards ceremony: 9:15am

    Parking: Free parking will be available in Houston Astros lots A, B and C located off of Preston Street on the east side of Minute Maid Park.

    Restriction: Pets, roller blades, skates, strollers, bicycles, baby joggers and any other related wheeled devices will be prohibited.
