Obama catches heat for hedging on Houston debate

Barack Obama agreed Thursday to debate Hillary Rodham Clinton in Texas before the state's March 4 primary that has become newly key with both presidential candidates trying to pull ahead in the race for the Democratic nomination. No date or place for the Texas debate has been set. Obama's campaign made the announcement Thursday evening hours after Clinton supporters in Texas criticized Obama for not agreeing to a Feb. 28 debate in Houston.

The stakes in the delegate-rich March 4 Texas primary rose significantly after a close battle on Super Tuesday failed to produce a Democratic front-runner. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) APTV-02-07-08 1853CST
