Friends, family and former students are remembering a band teacher whose career spanned decades. Conrad Johnson died on Sunday, just days after he was honored at a benefit for music education and scholarship in his name.

Nicknamed "Prof," Conrad Johnson taught band at Houston's Kashmere High School. His bands were considered the best in the nation, winning many competitions. His family says he was known publicly as an innovator, an educator and a man of passion to hundreds of former students.

"A person who cared about people and taught not just children, yes children, he didn't just teach them about music. He taught them about life," said Johnson's son, Conrad Johnson, Jr.

Conrad Johnson was 92. Funeral arrangements are being planned.
