'Angels' help WWII vet whose home was destroyed by Harvey

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A World War II veteran is getting a 100th birthday gift he never saw coming after Harvey destroyed his home.

Bill Fly's Willowbrook home looks like so many across our area. The inside is gutted, and personal items laid out on the front yard.

He's not recovering alone. A number of companies have offered free services, businesses raising awareness, and people have volunteered time to clean his home.

Fly is not just dealing with flood damage. He recently lost his wife as well.

He's overwhelmed by the support. So far, an online campaign has raised more than $70,000.

We spoke with the veteran Wednesday and he got emotional as he talked about the people helping him.

Whether it's time, materials, or money, these angels, as Fly calls them, are determined to get him back in his home.

"I can't believe that they would help someone like me," Fly said. "They've got to be sent from heaven or something."

While a lot of Fly's items are being thrown away, he said some World War II memorabilia was able to be saved.
