Abilene police officer killed
Investigators say they suspect homicide in the death of an off-duty Abilene police officer found dead in his home, but they don't believe he was targeted as a random law enforcement officer.

An off-duty West Texas police officer found slain in his home was bound at the hands and feet, according to affidavits for search warrants released Thursday.

The body of Abilene police Officer Don Allen was discovered Aug. 31 at the home he shared with his fiancee in Clyde, 14 miles east of Abilene. Clyde police found the victim in the bedroom of his home.

The affidavits say Allen's death appeared to be by strangulation. Autopsy results were pending.

A husband and wife from Abilene, Phillip and Violetta Walter, were arrested days later and remained in Taylor County Jail in Abilene on Thursday charged with murder. Bonds have been set at $500,000 each.

"Investigators recorded evidence from the home consisting of latent fingerprints and items potentially containing DNA evidence," Texas Rangers said in search warrant affidavits.

The suspects were seen at an Abilene pawn shop in Abilene pawning evidence from Allen's home, while some items missing from Allen's home was found in the home and vehicles of the suspects, the affidavits state.

In statements the suspects gave, investigators have been able to place both of them at the time of the slaying.

Police say a police-issued radio belonging to Allen was found Wednesday afternoon by a highway contractor along Farm Road 18, near Clyde. Allen's service revolver was still missing, Sgt. Lynn Beard told The Associated Press.

Still to be determined is whether the couple and Allen had crossed paths previously, and if so when, as well as if the couple was suspected in any other crimes, Beard said.
