HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Authorities said a 4-year-old boy has been reunited with his family after the child was found wandering alone in west Harris County overnight.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a call at about 12:50 a.m. on Tuesday in the 6600 block of Highway 6 near Schiller Road. At the scene, deputies discovered what they initially described as a 3-year-old girl found alone.

Investigators said they checked with local daycares and child drop-offs for anyone who could recognize the child. The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office and the Houston Police Department were contacted as well for any missing child reports, HCSO said.

The Department of Child Protective Services took custody of the toddler, who was checked at Texas Children's Hospital, according to authorities.

In an update, investigators told ABC13 that the child was, in fact, a 4-year-old boy. HCSO said the child has "really long hair and was thought to be a girl."

In the same update, officials told ABC13 that the child had escaped his home and wandered away until he was found by someone driving nearby.

Authorities said the parents were found after they reported the child was missing and the family had been reunited.

HCSO said that its Child Abuse Unit was leading the investigation. Officials did not say if there were any charges involved in this case. HCSO said they were "happy to reunite the family."
