HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- We started off Father's Day with a round of thunderstorms blowing in from the southwest, but now that the main wave of storms has moved away, rain chances are down to just 40% for the rest of today.
There's still enough tropical air for isolated downpours to pop up in the steamy air. Just remember to get dad out of the pool if you hear thunder roar! Sunshine eventually warms the rain-cooled air all the way into the upper 80s. Factor in the humidity, and it will feel closer to 100 degrees during the peak heat of the day.
This week is the first official week of summer, and it's surely going to feel like it! A heat dome will set up over west Texas that will also keep Southeast Texas hot with morning lows starting in the mid-upper 70s and afternoon highs climbing into the low-mid 90s. Humidity levels will remain high enough that some days could have Heat Advisories with a heat index of 108 or hotter.
Checking local rain gauges and rainfall estimates from 13 Alert Radar, much of Houston and Harris County picked up between 3 to 7 inches of rain this past week. Some communities saw over 9 inches of rain too. Farther south, some of the highest totals come from Brazoria and Galveston counties with over a foot of rain falling near Seabrook. Houston's official rainfall total for June is nearing 8", which is 4" above normal through the first 20 days of the month.
There are a few plumes of Saharan dust over the Atlantic basin that could eventually impact us here in Southeast Texas. Visit our Tropical Update page for a more in-depth tropical weather discussion and forecast.
