The vote comes a week after the US Supreme Court decided to allow the longstanding practice of prayer at the onset of government meetings. Prayer is now part of League City's council meeting. It used to be said before the meeting started.
"Have everybody raise up to do the prayer then I'd have to tell everybody to sit back down. Then I call roll then the pledges, then everybody have to stand up again," Mayor Tim Paulissen said.
The city says an attorney threatened to sue if the panel continued to pray during meetings.
