Mexican judge orders Zetas cartel leader to trial

MEXICO CITY, Mexico

An official with the Federal Judicial Council says Trevino Morales will be tried for money laundering and weapons possession.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday because he is not allowed to discuss the case. He said the judge can add other charges as the trial develops.

Federal security spokesman Eduardo Sanchez said after Trevino Morales' arrest last week that he would be charged with homicide, torture, organized crime, money laundering, weapons possession and drug trafficking.

The 40-year-old is at a maximum security prison in Mexico state.

Known as "Z-40," Trevino Morales is suspected of ordering the kidnappings and killings in Tamaulipas state of at least 265 migrants.
