Suspect Tasered after five-hour SWAT standoff in north Harris County

HOUSTON

It started around 7:30 last night with a domestic disturbance at the Emerald Cove Apartments in the 16700 block of Kuykendahl. Harris County Sheriff's deputies say a female caller stated a male had struck her several times. She fled the apartment with her four-year-old child, but was unable to leave with her 10-month-old baby.

Deputies say the man, identified as Karriem Coates, barricaded himself inside an apartment and told responding officers that he would shoot them if they tried to go inside.

SWAT officers were called to the scene. They swarmed the block and told neighbors to go inside their apartments and stay there.

But one woman was concerned for the safety of her family and came outside.

"I walked over there to see what was going on. One of the officers, I asked him what was going on since I live here and said did y'all get the criminal? He says no, he's still barricaded in his apartment with a 10-month-old child," said neighbor Sheila Meza.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, deputies tried for several hours to negotiate with Coates, but were unsuccessful.

At around 12:30am, deputies say SWAT officers entered through a patio door and deployed a Taser to subdue Coates. He was taken into custody.

The 10-month-old baby was rescued from the scene and appears to be OK.

Coates, 29, is being held at the Harris County Jail. He is charged with retaliation and assault on a family member.
