Mass shooting at Newtown elementary school reignites debate over gun control

HOUSTON

A tweet was circulated this weekend. It was posted by local Democratic Party precinct chair who wants tightened gun control, but the way he voiced it is another matter, and we have the reaction of one gun store owner.

This may turn out to be the busiest holiday season ever for gun sales. It is at one store in League City.

A combination of the holiday and the school shooting in Connecticut, that's why shopper Dan Rager is pricing an AR-15 rifle.

"For home defense, pretty much home defense," Rager said.

What happened in Newtown has elevated rhetoric in the debate for and against gun control. The starkest example is a tweet posted after the shooting by a Houston member of the Texas Democratic Party's state executive committee. John Cobarruvias, who was elected to the party committee, wrote "Can we now shoot the NRA and everyone who defends them?"

We spoke to Cobarruvias by phone Monday.

"I think my emotions got the best of me on this one. I don't think it was the right thing to do. And that's just my personal opinion, I don't think it was the right thing," he said.

Cobarruvias says it was not a death threat. He also supports tighter gun control in the wake of the deaths of 20 elementary school students.

Brandy Liss is a member of the NRA and the owner of the Arms Room in League City.

"He is way out of line to say something like that. And here he is talking about shooting someone. Where he's gonna get that gun? Is he a legal gun owner?" Liss said in response to Cobarruvias' tweet.

She is also the mother of a six-year-old daughter, and when she told her of the shootings in Connecticut...

"She said where were all the good people with guns? Because if the good people with guns were there, they could have protected the children," Liss said. "That's what my six-year-old daughter said and she gets it.

We also spoke by phone to a representative of the Texas Democratic Party, and he said the views represented in that tweet do not reflect those of the party. He added that he believes that everyone wishes they could take back something they've said.
